Fast Response Circuits

The response time of most Lee solenoid valves can be reduced by operating the valve at higher than normal supply voltage in conjunction with a properly selected zener diode. When used in this way, care must be taken that the power rating of the valve is not exceeded, or damage from excessive heat may occur. Calculate the power ( P=(V*V)/R) and multiply this by the percent on time in the duty cycle. The result is the mean power dissipation, which should be less than the valve's maximum power rating as shown in the Lee Coil Electrical Characteristics table.

Shown below is a typical circuit designed to enhance the response of a LFAA1201418H. Circuit components have been selected for this particular valve.

Using the circuit above, the valve's response time is reduced from 4.0 msec to 1.3 msec to turn on, and from 4.5 msec to 3.2 msec to turn off.
