Hydraulic, fuel, and pneumatic systems are typically designed to withstand low levels of small-size contaminants but may be damaged by single pieces of large debris. This can result in reduced performance, damage, or even catastrophic system failure. Despite efforts to clean hardware prior to assembly, rogue particles and debris often materialize in fluidic systems. For example, contamination may be introduced prior to operation by either the manufacturing or assembly process.
Contamination may also be generated during operation, such as when meshing gears or friction between two sliding metal components results in erosion. Lastly, debris may be introduced during the maintenance or refilling of an open system. Placing Lee safety screens upstream of critical components and tight passages will help protect your system from the performance issues and damage associated with contamination.

All fluidic systems must have adequate filtration to ensure that the fluid does not contain debris which will impact performance. This may mean using a 4 micron filter made from inert plastics to protect against dust particles entering a medical or scientific analyzer or using a 10 micron high pressure steel filter to protect gaseous satellite propulsion systems.
